| Thomas Mann - Death in Venice |
| Really more a novella than a novel, this is the most artistically perfect of all Mann’s works. It follows the last journey of a dying writer, Von Aschenbach, to the Venice Lido, and his fatal platonic attraction to the beautiful youth, Tadzio. The process of falling in love and the consequent absurdity of needing to be oneself youthful is lyrically rendered. The delicate development of pitiful pursuit and absurd obsession is explored with huge skill. Based in Mann’s own life experience, he called it “a strange sort of moral self-castigation’.
A tale of genius and a wonderful exploration of an artist’s relation to life.
