Persuaded by her revolting family to give up her first love, a dashing young sea captain, Anne realises the enormity of her mistake. Anne’s suffering is most tenderly handled because Austen’s personal experience of loss filters into the fiction. Two of her brothers became admirals, and her knowledge of life at sea permeates the book. This is the great novel of Austen’s maturity. She involves us totally in the necessity for Anne to get a second chance. Austen herself never did. |
