George Eliot 'Middlemarch'
In 8 books, Eliot\'s greatest novel came out in 1871-72, and has influenced every serios novelist since. Tolstoy wrote that he could never have written \'Anna Karenina\' without it. Eliot explores the souls of her characters..the large souled and the small. It is a novel about the soul\'s journey, and demonstrates better than any other of her works that \'no man is an island\'.We all affect each other and this immense work explores the multiple ways in which this natural law works, for good or ill. Dorothea Brooke\'s two marriages, one to an aging ineffectual scholar and one to his young politician cousin, bring her into collision with society. She cannot be a \'nice\' woman if she married either one. Of course. Eliot herself knew all about social disapproval! Her own life of unorthodox choices cost her dear, but her courage in seeking out ways to convey Truth is one of the great stories of the history of \'fiction\'. Her best loved characters always aspire, even if they don\'t always succeed.
