Wilkie Collins - The Woman in White |
Wilkie Collins, Dickens’ friend and collaborator, is generally credited as being the first detective story writer. Here he will keep you in suspense in a long novel, with a wonderful cast of villains and victims. Collins is the supreme master of melodrama, but he, like Dickens, is also interested in social justice.
The position of women in mid 19th Century Britain meant that they could be put away in asylums by husbands who wanted their inheritance. Based on a true story, Collins makes the original factual events into a piece of artistry of a dramatic compulsiveness that makes it impossible to put down.
