| Fyedor Dostoyevsky - The Brothers Karamazov |
| Out of a hugely dramatic life, including the murder of his own father by his serfs, comes this classic. It represents a kind of sum-total of Dostoyevsky’s creative, philosophical and ideological thinking. Following the murder of the depraved landowner Karamazov, we are led into complete absorption with the fates of his four sons. Dostoyevsky creates a tragedy of Shakespearean force and vividness, embodying the disintegration of Russia in the 1870s. This lecture looks at how the novel came out of Dostoyevsky’s own life, to give us the possibility of a walk through the essence of his uniquely Russian world. |
